The Good Place: Season 2 created by Michael Schur (NBC, Fremulon, 3 Arts Entertainment, Universal Television) Starring Kristen Bell, William Jackson Harper, Jameela Jamil, D’Arcy Caden, Manny Jacinto, Marc Evan Jackson, and Ted Danson. Do We Owe Each Other? What do we owe each other? Day by day. Hour by hour. Minute by minute. Our actions emerge in the context of relationships to others. Our decisions determine our relational orbits. The choices of a parent influence the expectations of life for the child. The management style of the boss alters the psyche of the employee. So, what do we owe each other when our decisions influence each other so greatly? Well, any movement forward, with even an ounce of empathy,… Read More →

Television Show Review: The Good Place: Season 1

The Good Place - Season 1

The Good Place: Season 1 created by Michael Schur (Fremulon, 3 Arts Entertainment, Universal Television) Starring Kristen Bell, Ted Danson, William Jackson Harper, Jameela Jamil, D’Arcy Carden, and Manny Jacinto. Simmering Craters Since Lost, network television has left a simmering crater of paint-by-numbers drivel. I speak hyperbolically, but solid programming is few and far between on the networks. Even of the network shows we watch in my household, most have clear deficiencies stomached for the greater good of television consumption. Sadly, the best and most promising network shows are not long for this world. The further away from the surreal mysteries of Lost, the more promising series die after fledgling glimpses of promise. In fact, after too many burns, I’ve… Read More →

Television Show Review: Parks and Recreation: Season 7

Parks and Recreation Season 7

Parks and Recreation: Season 7 created by Greg Daniels and Michael Schur (Deedle-Dee Productions, 3 Arts Entertainment, Universal Media Studios) Starring Amy Poehler, Nick Offerman, Aubrey Plaza, Chris Pratt, Aziz Ansari, Jim O’Heir, Retta, and Adam Scott. *Spoiler Alert for Previous Seasons* Job Satisfaction A recent Gallup poll exhibits the stark issues America faces in the workforce. Approximately 70% of the workforce hates their job. Even worse, around 40% of the workforce actively inhibits performance in the workplace due to poor job satisfaction. We are afflicted with unhappiness. We barely put up with the people around us for 40 hours a week. Given these trends, the pure joy and wish fulfillment at the core of Parks and Recreation represents an… Read More →

The Office Season 9

The Office: Season 9 created by Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant, and Greg Daniels (Reveille Productions, NBC Universal Television, Deedle-Dee Productions) Starring John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, and Rainn Wilson. Warning: Spoilers ahead for earlier seasons. What has the film crew been doing all these years? Considering its premise—a documentary crew filming an office to depict work-life in America—why would a crew film its subjects for 9 years? Given their intentions, surely no more than a year of footage would suffice? Early in the concluding season of The Office, the viewer discovers the reason for sticking with these employees for so long. The crew remains—and truthfully, we watch—because we all want to know what becomes of Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam (Jenna… Read More →

Television Show Review: 30 Rock: Season 7

30 Rock: Season 7 created by Tina Fey (Broadway Video, Little Stranger, NBC Studios) Starring Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Tracy Morgan, Jane Krakowski, and Jack McBrayer. The Next Home Improvement I can’t help but consider Tina Fey’s memoir, Bossypants, while thinking about Season 7 of 30 Rock. In her memoir, Fey admits the goal of her critically acclaimed NBC series was not to become an indie hit—or critically acclaimed for that matter. Instead, Fey hoped for the next Home Improvement, a ratings smash that was funny, but first and foremost, a money maker viewed by the canaille. By its standards, 30 Rock failed. It never reached the highest ratings pantheon, constantly losing to the flavor-of-the-month from CBS. But to assess… Read More →

Television Show Review: Revolution

Revolution: Season 1 created by Eric Kripke Starring Billy Burke Tracy Spiridakos David Lyons and Graham Rogers Lights Out The new dystopian craze set forth by none other than The Hunger Games has made a new television show emerge, that I’m happy to say shows promise. The NBC television drama, Revolution depicts a world much like ours—one completely dependent on electricity. The only difference is that due to a small group of rebels, the electricity has gone out, and no one really knows why. The world is ruled by fear, and more specifically by a militia who has stockpiled supplies. Revolution’s concept is truly intriguing and fascinating. A massive milita is run by a despot who, in addition to being a less than merciless leader,… Read More →
